Prof. K. Srinath Reddy, a global leader in preventive
cardiology and public health, has been appointed President Elect of the World
Heart Federation.
Prof.
K. Srinath Reddy MD, DM, MSc has been appointed President Elect of the World
Heart Federation, based on an unanimous vote by members at the General Assembly
last week.
Prof.
Reddy will serve a two-year term, effective from January 2013.
The
World Heart Federation, with more than 200 member organizations, is dedicated
to leading the global fight against heart disease and stroke with a focus on
low- and middle-income countries.
Prof.
Reddy has been involved with the Federation since 2003, and has been a Board
member since 2007 where he held the post of Chairman, Foundations’ Advisory
Board (2007–2010) and is currently Chair, Scientific and Policy Initiatives
Committee (2011–2012).
He is
presently President of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and former
head of the Department of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS).
“Cardiovascular
diseases are collectively the leading cause of death across the world and are
increasing at an alarming rate in low- and middle-income countries. This global
threat requires a global thrust to counter and contain it,” said Prof. Reddy.
“The
ambit of heart health must extend from the hub of global policy to the throb of
a person’s pulse.
From
tobacco control to promotion of healthy diets and physical activity, national
and global policies must encourage and enable people to practice healthy
habits.”
Having
trained in cardiology and epidemiology, Prof. Reddy is regarded as a global
leader in preventive cardiology and a thought leader in public health.
In
particular, Prof. Reddy has played a particularly active role in advancing the
agenda of tobacco control.
He was
awarded the World Health Organization (WHO) Director General’s Award for
outstanding contributions to global tobacco control in 2003, and the Luther
Terry Medal of the American Cancer Society for outstanding leadership in global
tobacco control in 2009.
